Joshua Tree has got to be one of the best and most complete albums ever made. It was such a breakthrough album for U2 on the international stage and every track is a gem. I remember listening to it nearly every day on my way to school on my tape based walkman way back in the last century. Well its been 20 years and U2 have managed to keep up the creativity and become middle aged and yet continually cutting edge and they are re-releasing Joshua Tree in 4 different formats.
A remastered single CD – it was a wonderful album but it did have a hissy quality to it – remastering will do it good.
A double CD version – featuring B-sides some of us had already from the U2 Singles collection – but some unreleased material – check out a wonderful new track. called “Wave of sorrow” which bono only finished recording the day before yesterday. Its worth a listen it contains some powerful lyrics recorded after Bono had spent some time amongst the poor in Africa. He quotes Solomon, the Old Testament King who was the son of David. he also powerfully rewrites the beattitudes (a poetic part of the sermon on the mount).
A limited edition super edition – which has the double cd and a dvd featuring a live concert from the Joshua Tree tour from Paris. This is the concert tour I most wanted to see U2 on. I used to have an old tape bootleg of a concert and it was excellent – despite sounding like it had been recorded underwater. The DVD also includes a documentary (outside its america) and an alternate version of the with or without you video and an unseen red hill mining town video.
